License Courses
While anybody is allowed and encouraged to listen on the radio, every Radio Amateur has to have a License granted by OfCom to transmit. There are 3 tiers of license, Foundation, Intermediate, and Full, with each exam requiring a deeper knowledge of radio but permitting you to transmit on higher powers, more frequencies, and even to design and use your own equipment!
The courses are taught in our specialised RSTC by our experienced Secretary Bill G4YWD, and Exams are also held there under the eye of our Invigilators.
The Exams themselves are created by the RSGB, who upon receiving news of your success will provide you with a code that OfCom will use as proof you can be issued a License of that level.
Courses are ran on a demand basis, contact us here to register your interest.
Foundation Courses
The Foundation License is the first step in your Journey as a Radio Amateur. It covers the essentials of Electrical and Radio theory, as well as safety in the shack and the rules and regulations of the License. At the end of the course you will take the Foundation exam to earn your M7 Foundation Callsign!
The Foundation License grants you a power limit of up to 25W and is perfect if you want to get on the air with VHF or UHF handhelds, and even sufficient for HF.
Intermediate Courses
The Intermediate License is the next step up from Foundation. It both goes more into depth on the concepts learned in the Foundation course and covers new topics such as the interactions between Inductance and Capacitance. At the end of the course you will take the Intermediate Exam to earn your M8/M9 Intermediate Callsign.
The Intermediate License raises the permitted power to up to 100W, allowing you to make use of the full power of most high-end base station radios.
Full Courses
The Full License course is the most complex of the courses, covering highly technical and scientific parts of Radio technology. At the end of the course you will take the Full License exam to earn you M0 Full Callsign.
The Full License allows you to use up to 1000W, as well as many other special permissions such as being allowed to supervise an unlicensed person in the operation of your Radio.
Direct-To-Full Exam
Normally each License Level must be taken in sequence, but if you already have a lot of experience in radio technology then there is a Direct-To-Full exam available. The Direct-To-Full exam is difficult, but completion will earn you the Full License without requiring your Intermediate.
